Epiphyllum or Orchid Cactus 'Sarah Courant' (Epiphyllum 'Sarah Courant')
This extremely magnificent and exotic Epiphyllum or Orchid Cactus 'Sarah Courant' is a true wonder of tropical forests that will completely change your perceptions of cacti! Unlike classic, spiny desert cacti, this is an epiphytic jungle dweller that naturally grows on tree branches. It stands out with long, flat, and wavy stems (which visually resemble leaves), but its true, breathtaking beauty is revealed during flowering. The 'Sarah Courant' variety boasts huge, refined, and stunningly beautiful flowers in soft pink and fuchsia tones. It is an extremely dynamic, elegantly hanging, and long-living houseplant that will add a bold, wild, and exotic natural accent to any interior. It is an ideal, joy-enhancing, and completely safe gift both for experienced cactus collectors and anyone who wants to experience the magic of tropical flowering in their home!
CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
☀️ Light: Bright but diffused light. For the epiphyllum to grow strong and be able to bloom in the future, it needs a large amount of light. However, strictly protect it from direct, scorching midday sun rays, which will quickly burn its flat stems and turn them reddish-brown or yellow. An east or west-facing windowsill is an absolutely great choice. Morning or evening sun will be very welcome!
-
💧 Watering: Regular and moderate. Important to know: since this is a tropical (not desert) cactus, it requires more water than ordinary cacti, especially in spring and summer. Keep the soil evenly lightly moist, but allow the surface layer to dry slightly between watering. It absolutely cannot tolerate root soaking in standing water in the saucer! In winter (dormant period), reduce watering significantly, but do not allow the plant to dry out completely and for a long time.
-
🌡️ Temperature/Humidity: Feels great at warm room temperature during the active growing season. In summer, this cactus can safely be taken outside into fresh air (in a shaded place, for example, under a tree branch or on a terrace). However, the most exciting secret of flowering is wintering: for the plant to set flower buds, it needs a cool dormant period in winter (ideally around 10–15°C). It tolerates normal indoor air well but, unlike its desert relatives, will also appreciate slightly increased air humidity.
-
🐾 Pets: Friendly. This exotic jungle cactus is non-toxic and completely safe in your home with curious cats and dogs.
🏠 MOST SUITABLE LOCATION:
-
A high shelf or hanging pot (an absolutely ideal place, as the plant’s long, flat stems will slowly bend downwards and form a hanging cascade).
-
A bright and cool glazed loggia or conservatory (a great place for safe and flower bud-promoting wintering of the plant).
SPECIFICATIONS:
-
Height: 20 cm
-
Pot diameter: 12 cm
⚠️ Note and reality check about flowering: Plants are living organisms, and it is important to keep in mind that this is a relatively small seedling (20 cm). To expect the epiphyllum’s huge flowers, you will need to be patient – the plant needs to grow a bit and reach maturity. Flower buds will form on the older stems, usually in areolas (small indentations on the edges of the stem). Important to know nature’s secrets: what you see as "leaves" are actually the plant’s flat stems! When repotting, it is strictly forbidden to use ordinary, heavy desert cactus soil with a large amount of sand! You must use an extremely airy, humus-rich, and loose epiphyte soil mix (peat substrate generously mixed with orchid bark, perlite, and a little leaf soil) so the roots can breathe freely as in the tropical forest.
